Why Are More Adults Taking Up Ice Skating?

Ice skating has long been associated with childhood — lessons at the local rink, weekend outings with friends, or skating during school vacation. But lately, more adults are stepping onto the ice.

Adult skating has always been part of the skating community, but 2026 has brought renewed attention to the growing number of adults getting back on the ice, discovering the sport for the first time, and making skating part of their regular routine.

According to U.S. Figure Skating, Learn to Skate USA membership increased 4% this year, while participation in the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships increased 7%. The organization has also highlighted particularly exciting growth among adult skaters.

So, what’s behind the increase?

Reinvent Your Health Routine on the Ice

Let’s be honest — going to the gym isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time.

Skating offers a different kind of workout. It challenges your balance, coordination, legs and core while giving you something to focus on beyond simply counting reps or minutes.

Whether you’re working on your first glide, improving your crossovers or simply getting more comfortable on the ice, there is always something to work toward. And when you’re having fun, it doesn’t feel quite so much like exercise.

Ditch the Daily Routine and Find Your Edge

There is something invigorating about stepping outside your comfort zone.

Maybe you never learned to skate as a child. Maybe you skated years ago and haven’t been on the ice since. Or maybe you’ve always wanted to give it a try.

Adult Learn to Skate programs give beginners the opportunity to learn alongside other adults in a welcoming environment and at their own pace. Each new skill brings a little more confidence, whether it’s making your first lap around the rink or finally mastering that crossover you’ve been working on.

And that first time you skate across the rink without holding the wall? That’s a pretty good feeling.

No Judges, No Pressure, No Problem.

Skating isn’t just about what happens on the ice. It’s also about the people you meet along the way.

Adult skating creates a built-in community. You see familiar faces each week, encourage one another and celebrate each other’s progress. In a world where so much of our social interaction happens through a screen, there is something refreshing about showing up somewhere in person and simply doing something together.

For many adults, the rink becomes more than a place to skate. It’s a place to connect, have fun and carve out a little time for yourself.

A Little Olympic Inspiration Never Hurts

The Olympics aren’t the only reason adults are skating, but watching the world’s best skaters can certainly be inspiring.

For some, watching the 2026 Winter Olympics may have brought back childhood memories. For others, it may have sparked a new thought:

Maybe I should try that.

And while most adults aren’t stepping onto the ice with Olympic competition in mind, watching elite athletes can be the spark that gets someone through the rink doors for the first time.

Find Your New Favorite Way to Move

Maybe that’s the real reason we’re seeing more adults on the ice.

Skating brings together exercise, fun, confidence, community and a little nostalgia — all in one activity.

“We’re seeing more adults recognize that they don’t have to be a kid to start skating,” Alane Swiderski, VP of Programming & Services at FMC Ice Sports. “You don’t have to compete, and you certainly don’t have to be an expert. You can come to the rink, learn at your own pace, meet other people and enjoy being on the ice.”

For some, it’s a workout. For others, it’s a social outlet, a new challenge or a chance to reconnect with something they enjoyed years ago. And for plenty of people, it’s simply an opportunity to do something fun.

So if you’ve ever watched people on the ice and thought, I wish I could do that — maybe it’s time to give it a try.

Your next favorite workout might be waiting at the rink.
