Families spending winter break at Springfield’s Smead Arena ice rink
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Winter vacation week is leading some families to put on their skates and enjoy some time at the Smead Arena ice rink in Springfield.
The rink was full of people from near and far Wednesday taking advantage of its public skating hours.
“I’m an adult skater,” said Springfield resident Lisa Mielke. “I only started skating in after college and it’s really fun and some really good exercise and I really love challenging myself with it, and so it’s really great to have the local rink and at really reasonable prices for public skate.”
Robin Snowden is from Florida. She joined the locals while enjoying her vacation with an old friend.
“Well I’m here with my friend from camp,” said Snowden. “We’ve known each other for about 7 years now and we just thought it would be fun to come out here and ice skate.”
“I just wanted to play hockey because I won’t be here for practice since we’re leaving for Gritinwash,” said Ludlow resident Tristin Ribeiro “And so I figure we’ll get one last skate in before I go.”
The ice time also allowed some to try out new presents and get some exercise around the holidays.
“I love seeing everybody out today,” said Mielke. “Seeing so many kids trying on their new skates and families getting out for the holiday and so I’m really happy we have a great local rink like this.”
The Smead Arena is open for public skating Thursday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Admission fees and skate rentals are both $6 each.”
