Featured Rink: Smead Arena – Springfield, MA
Raymond C. Smead Arena is a Commonwealth of Massachusetts public ice skating facility overseen by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Located on 1780 Roosevelt Ave, in Springfield Massachusetts, the arena first opened back in 1971. FMC Ice Sports has been operating the arena for DCR since 2002. Manager Frank Gramolini has been with FMC for the past 16 years. He usually begins his day at Smead around 7:30 in the morning to prepare for an action packed day.
Smead Arena offers various types of Learn to Skate classes along with Freestyle figure skating classes. Public skating is offered daily and an updated public skating schedule can be found on our website! Some local organizations who play out of this facility include Springfield College, Chicopee High School, and Ludlow Youth Hockey. When the Mass Mutual Center is hosting an event, the Springfield Thunderbirds will host practices at the arena. Sometimes you can catch their mascot, Boomer, at public skating!
Smead arena is equipped with a snack bar, 4 locker rooms + Chicopee High School’s locker room, a spacious lobby with seating and arcade games, and free Wi-Fi. Rental skates are also provided by the arena. Some famous pros who’ve stepped on the ice include ex-bruin, Frank Vatrano, and LA Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
