FMC Ice Sports is Turning 30!
FMC Ice Sports (Facility Management Corporation) was founded in 1992 to provide innovative and quality management, operations, and programming to public ice facilities. Since its inception, FMC has become the largest operator of public ice-skating facilities in the US, partnering with state, municipal and higher education agencies to achieve the shared mission of growing participation and bringing the joy of ice sports to everyone in the communities we serve.
Starting with six Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management (DEM) locations, FMC has since expanded to manage twenty-one Department of Conservation (DCR) – previously Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and Metropolitan District Commissioned (MDC) – owned locations, three municipally owned rinks, a university civic center, and purchased two other arenas to bring their total number of locations to twenty-seven. The core of the company is the state rink system program that is fundamental to ensuring affordable and equitable access to ice time and public skating for the citizens of the Commonwealth. This mission extends to the alternatively owned locations, as well, emphasizing access to all levels and types of ice sports.
From 1992-2002, FMC operated the DCR rinks and paid a set fee annually. In 2002, FMC entered into twenty-five year capital improvement leases with the Commonwealth. Since the establishment of these long-term agreements, FMC has invested over $50 million in capital improvements and fee payments to the DCR and municipal partners. In addition to these investments, nearly $500,000 has been awarded in scholarships to graduating high school seniors looking to further their education.
The state public rink system and program is fundamental to ensuring affordable and equitable access to ice time and public skating for the citizens of our Commonwealth. More than ever participation in ice hockey and skating depends upon these facilities and the public rink program to provide affordable access to families and individuals of all ages and abilities. FMC was founded to support and uphold this mission and bring the love of ice sports to future generations”, stated Rob McBride, Founder and President of FMC Ice Sports.
To celebrate our 30th year in operation, and in continued support of our communities, we will be donating 30% of the proceeds of all public skating admissions during the weekend of December 2-4, 2022 to the MA Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs Youth of the Year. Each year, one exceptional Club member is selected to be the National Youth of the Year. Now in its 76th year, the Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed and inspire. Please join us to celebrate and to support the inspiring youth of Massachusetts.
