At five years old, Michaela DeToma took her first Learn to Skate class at Pirelli Veteran’s Arena in Franklin. For the next four years, she advanced through the Step 1 Beginner level to Ice Skating Essentials. At age nine, Michaela learned that FMC Franklin was starting a performance and competition team at the beginning of the 2012 season. Thrilled by the prospect of performing in beautiful costumes to music, Michaela became one of the five original team members of FMC Franklin Finesse. Her first competition was at the William L. Chase Arena in Natick, where she skated an Alpha program to “Once Upon a Dream” and received a silver medal. Michaela was hooked.
After receiving a bronze medal at the 2012 Districts, Michaela quickly passed her Beta and Gamma tests, took two gold medals in the Annual Halloween Classic in Rockland, MA, and then three gold medals in her first national competition, the Holiday Challenge held in Danbury, Connecticut. As soon as she arrived home from Danbury, Michaela wasted no time in passing her Delta and Freestyle 1 tests so that she would be eligible to compete in the 2013 Bay State Games.
Michaela’s current program is a medley from the movie, Enchanted, which suits her perfectly. Although she will say her favorite part of skating is the athleticism of jumping, her artistry is her signature. “Michaela has a natural grace and beautiful expression on-ice,” says her coach Joanna Zehme. “She is dynamic and unafraid to attack her program. Michaela is a natural.” Off-ice, Michaela attends the Fred W. Miller Elementary School in Holliston, Massachusetts, where her favorite subject is Art. Michaela is also an avid Disney fan and she spends her birthday week in Disney World every year. By her own choice, all her programs to date have been choreographed to Disney songs.
